História

Banda americana formada em Los Angeles em 1981 por James Hetfield e Lars Ulrich. Ajudou a definir o thrash metal nos anos 1980 e, com o chamado Black Album (1991), levou o heavy metal ao grande público.

O Metallica começou em outubro de 1981, em Los Angeles, quando o baterista dinamarquês Lars Ulrich publicou um anúncio procurando músicos e encontrou o guitarrista e vocalista James Hetfield. Nos primeiros anos a formação mudou bastante: o guitarrista Dave Mustaine foi afastado em 1983 e substituído por Kirk Hammett, e o baixista Cliff Burton levou a banda a se mudar para a região de San Francisco.

Kill 'Em All (1983), Ride the Lightning (1984) e Master of Puppets (1986) colocaram o grupo na linha de frente do thrash metal, com músicas longas, riffs rápidos e arranjos cada vez mais elaborados. Em setembro de 1986, durante a turnê europeia, Cliff Burton morreu num acidente com o ônibus da banda na Suécia; Jason Newsted assumiu o baixo.

...And Justice for All (1988) trouxe One, primeiro videoclipe da banda. O álbum Metallica (1991), conhecido como Black Album, produzido por Bob Rock, simplificou o som e alcançou vendas enormes com Enter Sandman e Nothing Else Matters. Load (1996) e Reload (1997) aproximaram o grupo do hard rock, e S&M (1999) registrou shows com a Orquestra Sinfônica de San Francisco.

Os anos 2000 foram turbulentos: a banda processou o Napster, Newsted saiu em 2001 e Hetfield passou por tratamento de reabilitação, bastidores registrados no documentário Some Kind of Monster. Robert Trujillo entrou no baixo em 2003, ano de St. Anger. Death Magnetic (2008) marcou a volta ao som mais pesado, e o grupo entrou para o Rock and Roll Hall of Fame em 2009.

Depois de Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016), lançou 72 Seasons (2023) e seguiu em turnê mundial. É uma das bandas de rock que mais venderam discos na história.
